About Me

Picture
I am currently a Postdoc Researcher at Swartz Center for Computational Neuroscience at University of California San Diego (UCSD). I recently received my PhD in Bioengineering from UCSD. My research focuses on developing signal processing algorithms and machine learning techniques and exploring their applications to biosignals intersecting the fields of computational neuroscience, brain-computer interfaces, and brain health. For more information, see the overview of research projects and my publications, invited presentations, and open-source codes. I received my BS in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University.

Alongside my passion for scientific research and technology development, I also dedicate myself in education. I have mentored 10+ graduate and college students in their research projects and taught hundreds of students range from 3rd grader to PhD students in classrooms, with the philosophy that an educator (leader) should empower and facilitate students (teammates) in achieving their goals. In addition, I am also a freelance science writer and a blogger.

In my leisure time, I enjoy reading a wide range of books, playing saxophone and piano, playing tennis, surfing, hiking and traveling.

Interests

Science Writer

I enjoy communicating cutting-edge research and technology to general public, and have served as a science writer for many tech/science websites (in Chinese).
  • Introduction to Brain-Computer Interfaces: Part I and Part II (Published in The Investigator). Fun fact: the review articles ranked 2nd in Google Search Keyword "腦機介面" (Chinese term for Brain-Computer Interfaces), second to Wikipedia.
  • The Glass Brain (Published in CASE PRESS)
  • Published several articles on topics such as programming, virtual reality and online education for TechOrange

Blogger

In my Wordpress blog (in Chinese), I share my experiences and observations about grad school application, PhD training, research, and culture differences, hoping to benefit students who consider to pursue a MS or PhD in the US.
  • My blog has over 57k views! The most popular article "Tell me, why PhD?" has 10k+ views!
  • Invited by Innovation Open House (IOH) to share my experience as a PhD student in Bioengineering at UCSD.

Amateur Saxophonist

I have played saxophone (from alto, tenor, soprano to baritone) since middle school and have over 30+ public performance experiences in municipal concert halls or music festivals with school bands, Hsinchu Municipal Youth Wind Band, and a saxophone quartet.
  • Selected to attend the 1st Jazz Camp held by National Theater & Concert Hall, Taiwan, 2008
  • Chief Saxophonist, Hsinchu Municipal Youth Wind Band, Taiwan, 2002 - 2005

Sports and others

  • I enjoy playing tennis and I am a big Roger Federer fan. I started to play tennis when he won his first Grand Slam (now 19th).
  • Living in La Jolla for several years, I have to be a surfer.
  • Back in elementary school, I was a dedicated Go player and ranked 2-Dan (6-Dan is the highest for amateur player) after winning a series of local and national competitions. Hence I was lucky that I could enjoy watching the famous 5-game Go match between AlphaGo and Lee Sedol, personally experiencing the rise of artificial intelligence.

My Travel Map

As the old Chinese saying goes, "he that travels far knows much."
Through traveling, I learn to be humble in front of magnificent nature and be respectful to people from diverse culture.
